How a global law firm strengthened testing maturity, uncovered geographic latency and validated a business-critical risk platform

For a global law firm, application performance is more than a technical measure. It directly influences lawyer productivity, service consistency and confidence in enterprise transformation. When users across international offices experience the same system differently, hidden performance issues can quickly become business risks.

The client engaged Prolifics to assess and strengthen its software testing capability, investigate inconsistent CRM response times and independently validate a new risk management platform before enterprise acceptance.

The Challenge: Consistent Performance Across a Global Network

The firm needed an objective view of its existing testing processes, tools and skills. It also needed answers to two pressing performance questions.

Users in remote international offices were reporting slow response times in Interaction, the firm’s CRM platform integrated with Microsoft Outlook. Meanwhile, a new hosted Risk Manager solution, designed to replace spreadsheet-based risk models, had to demonstrate that it could support expected user volumes and meet defined non-functional requirements.

The challenge was clear: replace assumptions with reliable evidence and ensure critical legal systems could perform under realistic enterprise conditions.

The Prolifics Approach: Assess, Enable and Assure

Prolifics began with a cross-functional testing health check involving stakeholders across testing, security, infrastructure, development, project management, support and systems delivery. The assessment produced prioritized recommendations for improving testing quality.

To build sustainable internal capability, Prolifics also delivered Advanced Test Manager and Foundation-level training to relevant team members.

The engagement then moved into independent performance assurance. After evaluating Borland Silk Performer through a proof of concept, Prolifics designed tailored tests for the Interaction and Risk Manager platforms.

For Interaction, tests ran simultaneously from six international locations and the firm’s British office. Automated GUI testing was combined with server-side performance testing to capture the actual user experience under load.

For Risk Manager, Prolifics defined representative user journeys, documented transaction volumes and simulated concurrent browser-based activity using Silk Performer CloudBurst.

The Results: Measurable Insight and Confident Acceptance

Testing exposed a striking geographic performance gap. An intensive Interaction task that took approximately five seconds over a British connection took approximately 30 seconds from Asia – a sixfold difference. This evidence enabled the Networks and Server team to focus its investigation on network architecture and remote-office latency.

Risk Manager testing uncovered concurrency issues that caused the application to slow significantly under load. Prolifics worked iteratively with the client and development partner to identify problems, implement corrections and retest. The final platform met its response-time and non-functional requirements and was certified fit for purpose.

The engagement gave the client more than test results. It delivered stronger internal capability, prioritized quality improvements and a repeatable approach to performance validation.
